What is Our Mission?

I've been thinking a lot about this lately - what is the mission of the church?  It seems that this is something christians in America have issues agreeing upon.  Or, maybe the disagreement has more to do with how we approach or act out the mission in today's world.

But what are your thoughts?  Why do we have issues with this?

  1. First duty of a Christian is to worship. First duty of the church is to provide an outlet for that worship. Everything after that - while important - is icing.

  2. I'd say that our chief mission is to be emissaries of the Kingdom and to prepare the world for it's future fullness. Everything we do (worship, evangelism, preaching, teaching, discipleship, etc...) falls under this.

  3. But why is agreement on this such a problem for the church?

remedyconnect - I love your thinking.

  4. Don't even get me started on why we can't seem to agree on this issue. I mean, nothing is quite so central to the Christian faith than the answer to the question: "What are we supposed to do here?"

It seems to me that Jesus was overwhelmingly preoccupied with the reality of heaven becoming reality on earth (ie the Lord's prayer: "You will be done on earth as it is in heaven"). If this was so heavy on Jesus' heart, shouldn't it be on ours?

For some reason, I think we have the tendency to focus on the trees instead of the forest. Jesus is trying to accomplish something here, and we should join Him in His pursuits.

Thanks for the thought-provoking post and the quick responses. I'm definitely look forward to hearing more from you. Blessings,
